I have been diagnosed with Dermatographia by an allergist.
I am itchy on my stomach, back and sometimes my head. It doesn't happen 365 days a year. I have tracked this for the past 4 years and it seems to happen 1 or 2 times during the first 4 months of the year, so my initial thought was allergy to 'something' that might be blooming 'somewhere' in California.
I do not have visible hives, but my stomach and back get very WARM to the touch and when I scratch I then get the redness. I don't mind the redness, that is no big deal to me. It is the crazy itching that is VERY bothersome.
My doctor gave me Allegra 180 mg. It helped, but did not last 24 hrs, more like 10 hrs. So he told me to take 2 a day which was helpful but Blue Cross will not pay for 2 a day. So, I tried Allegra at 8am and then Zyrtec at 8pm and he also gave me samples of XYZAL, but that is not generic and I cannot afford it. I tried Atarax in the past, but it made me very sleepy.
Since this itch only happens at certain times of the year, is it possible I have Dermatographia AND a specific allergy and WHY does my skin get so HOT?
It is possible that an allergen only present at a certain time of year is triggering the reaction. I know in my case, the cold dry weather initiates it but in the summer I am much better. The hot skin could just be the way the histamine reaction is manifesting itself in your body. It sometimes happens to me as well, kind of like hot flushing. I remember after going off antihistamines, I experienced a couple of days of the skin getting hot and red.
