Each type of psoriasis likely has its own specific causes of psoriasis. However, often the exact cause cannot be determined as is the case for many other skin problems or skin diseases. Medications Can Be A Psoriasis Cause
The manner in which the body reacts to certain medications is a suspected cause of psoriasis. The typical medications that are of concern include anti-malarial drugs, beta-blockers used to treat high blood pressure and heart conditions, corticosteroids that are often used to treat psoriasis but over use or sudden withdrawal can lead to flare-ups, indomethacin (anti-inflammatory) used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, and lithium that is used to treat manic depression.
A Skin Injury Can Cause Psoriasis
A cause of psoriasis is a past skin injury. Psoriasis can flare up even after about two weeks from the original injury. Examples of skin injuries or skin traumas are many and may include each of the following: acupuncture, bites, bruises, burns, chafing, chemical irritation, cuts and scrapes, shaving, sunburn, tattooing, dermatitis, herpes blisters, and scabies.
Other Causes of Psoriasis
There are also a variety of miscellaneous factors, which may act as a causes of psoriasis in individuals. Cold and/or dry weather, hormonal changes, smoking, or heavy drinking are all suspected psoriasis causing factors.
Hereditary and genetic factors are likely causes because this skin care problem commonly runs in families. Some relevant research has indicated that a disorder in the immune system is a very likely cause of psoriasis skin rash. A certain white blood cell (T cell) causes the skin cells to grow faster than they normally would, resulting in raised skin patches that are typical of this problem. Normally the skin development and shedding cycle is 28 days. For people with this condition, the process is seven times faster leading to the piling up of skin cells.
